EXPERIENCE PEKIK COMMUNITY SERVICES
Not handouts, but a 'hand-up'please!
Pekik means ‘shout’ in Malay. We believe that being disadvantaged or underprivileged does not mean that you cannot be successful in life. All they need is a ‘hand-up’, not hand-outs. Pekik is a rallying shout to society to give the poorest of the poor in Singapore hope. At Pekik Community Services, we are strong believers in the ability of our children to succeed. Our programming and activities are designed to help our children reach their goals and fulfill their highest potential. We are proud of all our children, and love watching them grow into bright-minded and confident individuals. See how we’re involved in making a difference in our children’s lives.
WHO WE ARE
Paving the Way to a Brighter Future
Children have so much to offer to the world - we believe in the power that they hold, and know that they will mold future generations to come. At Pekik Community Services, we are here to give them the support they need in order to shape them into leaders of the future. We have a number of nutritional programs and educational initiatives that help nurture our youth and help them develop the skills they will carry throughout their lives. Donate today, and see how you can make an impact!
PROGRAMMES AND SERVICES
From absent parents, to drug addiction, to children-at-risk, there are many problems plague the beneficiaries we serve. The programmes and services we offer hopes to address some of these problems.
Our tuition programme for primary and secondary school children for example, prepares children for major exams like PSLE, GCE N and O Levels. In partnering with grassroots organisations, we hope to provide that little bit of help for the children to succeed in their studies.
Sports for Children-At-Risk is another one of our programmes. Sports is very important to keep the youths in this community engaged in doing something that is meaningful instead of focusing on bad influences like drugs and gang activities. We hope to hire a FAS certified coach to train both boys and girls here. We also hope to get them to participate in leagues to keep them motivated. Besides soccer, we are also thinking of supporting the sepak takraw teams which are already here.
We will also be starting a mentoring programme called the Big Brother / Big Sister programme where we hope to match people who have achieved something big in their lives with our youths here. We hope the mentors would be able to motivate our youths to dream big and make achievements in their lives.
Hunger and insufficient food is probably the biggest problem that many iof our beneficiaries face. There are senior citizens in our area who are less-abled and dependent on food distribution programmes to have at least one decent meal a day. The only proper foods some of the children in our areas eat are in their school tuckshops, provided by initiatives such as the School Pocket Money Fund.
We cannot turn a blind eye to this problem in our community and have decided to launch our Community Kitchen programme to benefit such residents. We want to provide simple, and yet nutritious meals to at least 100 senior citizens and children in our areas. This programme is essential and will supplement the other food programmes in our areas.
We have always contributed to the development of children and to the care of the elderly in the poorest of the poor neighbourhoods in Singapore through our wide range of programs. Our Volunteer Opportunities is centered on instilling strong values into our youth and provides a space for them to expand their mind while meeting new and interesting individuals.
